When it comes to success in life, be it at business, school, your marriage, or whatever- there’s no elevator to the top. You’ve got to take the stairs.
Too many people waste their time looking for shortcuts to success. If only they would’ve spent as much time working towards their goals, they would’ve been at the top already.
Here are 5 Tips to help you achieve success in life:
1.Identify your goal:
If you don’t know where you’re headed, how will you know where to go?
Identify your goal and put it down on paper. Make sure the goal is quantified and time-bound. Quantified goals tell you exactly how much/ how far, etc. Keeping it time bound helps you know exactly by when, you need to get there.
For example, “Make an extra profit of $1,000 by the end of this month, to pay for Katie’s tuition”, sounds a lot more concrete than, “Make more money to help the kids”.
2.Stop looking for shortcuts:
If you want to be in the top 10% at anything in life, stop looking for shortcuts.
I am not telling you to not work efficiently and undertake time consuming processes not beneficial for your goals. Today’s world is all about taking action and producing great results as fast as possible.
What I’m saying, is to stay away from schemes and programs that promise to get you to your goal in an unrealistic time span. When chasing success in life, you must get ready for your fair share of rejections, hardships, and mockery- it’s just part of the game. Don’t try and run away from it.
Once you know where you’re headed, figure out how.
Having a goal (point number 1), and knowing how you’re going to get there (having a plan), is your key to success in life.
This is why Step 1 is really important. Only if you know exactly where you’re headed, can you think of ways to get there. At the same time, remember point 2- don’t look for an easy way out.
Come up with a plan to reach that goal, and break it down into weekly or even daily progress goals. Over time, the small steps you take will turn into huge lifestyle changes.
For example, in order to save 1000 $, you can save 125 $ every week, for 8 weeks.
4.Identify your strengths and weaknesses:
Analyze. Have a fair understanding of your own strengths and weaknesses. “Know thyself”
Once you have a fair understanding of what you can and cannot do, work on making your strengths world-class- become a ‘professional’. Rely on these strengths to carry you forward in life. At the same time, don’t let your weaknesses get the better of you. Work on improving them and minimizing their effect on the product of your work.

5.Develop the habits of success:
Remember, we are not looking for shortcuts. We have a long-term goal in mind.
Once you have your long-term goals broken down into daily progress goals, make completing the daily goals a habit. Being able to stick to your goals, will carry you a long way in life.
Apart from that, develop the other habits of success, such as being focused, learning more, being open minded to change, etc.
Dealing with bad habits: Let’s be honest. All of us have something or the other we’re habituated to doing, that we aren’t very proud of. Be it unhealthy eating habits, alcohol, cigarettes, watching too much television, or anything else that’s counter-productive.
In his book ‘The Power of Habit’, Charles Duhigg talks about a 3-step procedure of how habits are formed:
Cue- You smell burgers and fries, on our walk back home and start salivating,
Routine- You dial up the nearest Wendy’s and make an order. You eat to your heats content, and
Reward- You feel amazing for a while.
You step on the scale, the next morning and well…. You don’t feel amazing any more, do you?
Charles talks about how the only way to break a bad habit is by getting rid of the cue. If you hadn’t smelt the burger and fries in the first place, you would’ve never wanted to have any yourself.
